As co-founding editor of Spare Rib, she worked with many women who were just starting to write as well as with established authors, publishing many new novelists of the time including Angela Carter. When Carmen Callil wanted to start Virago, Marsha also became involved in setting up the first women's publishing house in this country.
Subsequently, as fiction editor at Serpent's Tail, she learned more about book publishing, the rigours of bringing out translated fiction (Elfriede Jelinek for example) and was editor of first-time novelists Colm Tóibín and Susannah Dunn. As freelance editorial consultant she works with new writers, experienced authors switching genres, and helps writers of both fiction and non-fiction to find successful publication.
